Vision and Mission


AIIOC is an interdisciplinary independent platform-institute hosted by Universtas Airlangga (UNAIR) in Surabaya, Indonesia. AIIOC is dedicated to working with different constituencies in academia and beyond, across different walks of life and experiences. Its range of action includes research and education facilitation, network building, knowledge dissemination and capacity building. It promotes a southern, Southeast Asian, archipelagic, humanistic perspective, stressing the need to realign patterns of knowledge generation and collaboration in favour of a multi-centered south-south-north, local-global economy of knowledge sharing.


  1. Establishing a regional research center with the latest approach of Indian-Ocean that binds two major regions of the world, Southeast Asia and Africa
  2. Developing new perspectives on regional studies within academic, pedagogy and knowledge production domain with society.
  3. Increasing the capacity and exposure of teaching staff, researchers, and students at Universitas Airlangga at the international level.
  4. Becoming a collective platform in terms of research, publication, community service and international cooperation acceleration.
  5. Becoming an excellent center of the particular Universitas Airlangga as a hub for intellectuals, researchers and students in Southeast Asian and Indian Ocean region studies.
  6. Becoming a collective platform for the academic community of Universitas Airlangga in order to achieve IKU, IKT, SMART (Meaningful Research and Community Services) that are synergistic with other excellent programs
  7. Realizing an exact implementation of Freedom of Learning Independent Campus program in which the entire academic community is involved to increasing their contribution to the production of shared knowledge benefitting to every stakeholders.
